The issue with this method is you aren’t addressing the core issue with your vehicle that caused the check engine light to go on in the first place

back when it was must a bulb, my dad would take apart the the instrument cluster and take the bulb out.

Just do what I did and ignore it until it burns out. My 2007 Dodge doesn't have a check engine light on because it literally was on so long it stopped working, still has the codes though.
