This is a story that may surprise many Christians. Pastor Benny Hinn and Suzanne Hinn first married in 1979. After more than 30 years of marriage, Suzanne filed for divorce in 2010, citing “irreconcilable differences.” (Christianity Today) But what happened behind the scenes? According to Benny and Suzanne’s own later accounts, Benny said that his intense commitment to international ministry had taken a serious toll on their marriage. He acknowledged that he had allowed ministry to come ahead of his family and later said he realized his priorities needed to be reordered. (CBN) Suzanne also described a long period of personal struggles and dependence on prescription medication, which she said affected her emotionally and contributed to the crisis surrounding the marriage. These are their reported explanations, rather than an independent finding about the causes of the divorce. (CBN) There was also controversy surrounding Benny Hinn and fellow televangelist Paula White during the period of the first divorce. Hinn denied having an affair, while later acknowledging that his relationship with White was inappropriate. (CBN) Then came what many considered a remarkable reconciliation. After several years apart, Benny and Suzanne reconciled and remarried in 2013. Benny spoke publicly about forgiveness, healing and the restoration of their relationship. Pastors are human beings. Ministers need to protect their marriages, invest time in their families, seek counsel when necessary, and recognize that success in ministry cannot automatically be equated with success at home.
