@briannisss: There’s a difference between acknowledging what Miami has become and pretending its history began there. Black Americans and Black Bahamians were part of Miami’s foundation long before the major waves of Cuban migration that followed the 1959 revolution. Black residents also played a significant role in Miami’s 1896 incorporation, and Bahamian communities helped shape everything from the city’s labor force to its architecture and culture. That history matters when people tell English-speaking residents that they should “leave Miami” if they don’t speak Spanish. For some families, Miami isn’t somewhere they recently arrived. It’s somewhere their communities have helped build for generations. Recognizing that doesn’t diminish Miami’s Cuban or broader Latino identity. It just means Miami’s history is bigger than one chapter of it. #miami #florida #BlackHistory #miamidade #miamihistory
Haitians, west Africans, Asians all move to miami and they learn the language. It’s only Spanish speaking people that think this shouldn’t apply to them smh

While this convo is happening, I’ve noticed that nobody acknowledges the Seminole & Miccosukee people who built Miami from scratch & the fact that Black Americans were alongside them long before the Bahamians.

The Cuban’s over, ran Miami when they all fled Cuba in the 80s during the Mario boatlift that’s when a lot of of them came over here when I wouldn’t be sent back because of a wet foot dry foot deal so looked that up and that’s when most of them came over here, there was Cubans here, but not as many as there is now

I could talk about this all day. Born and raised in Miami. Could not get a job in Miami when I graduated college in 2015. I’ve had one job based in Miami since 2015. Had to find employment in Broward, and now you’re driving 30 mins-1 hour away for employment. My step dad used to work at Jackson Mem, was harassed by his coworkers.

I was born and raised in Miami, Spanish was taught an elementary, it was a part of the curriculum. Im not sure if they still teach it now, but I knew from themnthey were preparing us for the future. this has always been talked about even becoming a teenager before going into the workforce it was always you had to be bilingual. Now that I'm here in Georgia near Atlanta, whats happening in Miami is taking place here.

Yea my grandma is ancestors of the OG Bahamians that settled in Miami and my great grandfather helped intergrate the Orange Bowl and participated in a lot of sit-ins in the city. In addition, my grandfather came here from Georgia in the 50’s on his own as at like 14. I have roots deeply entrenched in the city, but I sadly had to leave for better opportunities and so do a lot of young folks in my family sadly. I’m in DC, my brother is in NYC, my cousin is in San Francisco.

On a similar note, the gentrification/overdevelopment in downtown Ft. Lauderdale and other parts of Broward is out of control right now. 😒 I recently heard a realtor refer to Pompano as the “new Sunny Isles” to encourage people who are interested in moving down from the Hamptons…
