We have a Chinese exchange student staying with us. I’d love to send my sons for an exchange to China for the experience

If I saw this experience on someone’s resume, I would be so much more inclined to interview that person.

Are the degrees harder to get out there? I feel like they’d run a strict program.

I had a chance to study ethnography in rural China in my early 20s and the lenses I gained from that trip still shape my thinking about society at least once a week or more. Life changing is cliche to say about cultural exchange opportunities, but it really was. I got to see approaches to society I never would have otherwise, I had so many Western assumptions and thinking challenged, and I found so much commonality in Chinese farmers and my family who immigrated to the north in the US from Appalachia. It validated things I was taught about hospitality and community mindedness, but goes under-appreciated in the US. Chinese people helped me understand my own people more.

I'm scared to apply because like what am I going to look like compared to my peers? I've seen the exams that Chinese art schools have and I definitely don't have that skill 😭
