@adivunsolicited: What is the United Nations?The UN was founded on October 24, 1945, by 51 countries, right after World War II killed an estimated 70 to 85 million people. It replaced the League of Nations, which failed to prevent that war. Today it has 193 member states, plus two non-member observer states, Palestine and the Holy See, which can speak but can't vote. The General Assembly gives every country one vote, but most of its resolutions are recommendations. The Security Council is where decisions become legally binding. It has 15 members, and five of them (the US, UK, France, China, and Russia) are permanent and each hold a veto. One veto can kill any resolution, even one about the vetoing country's own war. The UN also has no standing army and no police force. Peacekeepers generally need the host country's consent, and the International Criminal Court, which issues arrest warrants for war crimes, is a separate institution from the UN.
