Jon Bernthal is 49 and there's nobody in film who looks more like he'd actually fight you haha. Washington DC kid. He was a serious troublemaker growing up, by his own account, and got into a lot of fights. He went to Moscow in his twenties to train at the Moscow Art Theatre School, which is about as unlikely a route in as exists. Before that he played semi-professional baseball in Europe. Most people found him as Shane in The Walking Dead. He left after two seasons and spent years doing proper work in smaller parts. Then Fury, Sicario, Wind River, Baby Driver, The Wolf of Wall Street. Then The Punisher, where he played Frank Castle so well that people who'd hated every previous version came round to it, and Marvel brought him back years later because nobody else could do it. King Richard, the Bear, where he's in about two episodes and somehow the whole show revolves around him. Then Daredevil Born Again. What he does is honesty. He plays men who are barely holding it together and doesn't make it cool. There's no swagger in it. That's rare, and it's why directors keep hiring him for a specific kinda guy. The style is as plain as it gets. Plain tee, work jacket, jeans, boots. Tattoos, beard, cap. He dresses like a bloke who has dogs and goes to the gym, which is exactly what he is. Off screen, he runs a podcast called “Real ones” where he talks to people about real things. Nobody plays broken men better. Find Highball's free newsletter in our bio.
