I’m glad you said this. I’m not a naturally festive or jubilant person. But I do love and support my school. And I do think that what I do is important but I think there’s a lot of other things that we do that are important. I am keenly aware that for a lot of kids this is a safe place, And I don’t have a problem with it being fun too or with working towards better school culture in general. And that means showing up for the kids. I’ll go to an art night or a fall festival or a theater production. I’ll run a club. I can’t lie. I hide during pep rallies though. The volume gives me nosebleeds. 😂 they also don’t stock school spirit wear in my size 🙄.

A good example from when I was in high school. My band director noticed that a lot of the band kids were also in robotics. There was one year where the robotics club sponsor retired and there wasn't a replacement. Our band director helped sponsor the robotics club because she knew it was important to her students. It didn't matter that she didn't know anything about robotics, but her school spirit allowed her students to continue doing what they enjoyed.

As a teenager I thought spirit/school involvement were so lame, as an adult my mind was awakened. Maybe I just wasn’t mature enough but think your efforts might have matured me… GREAT JOB

Here are two moments that stand out for me. I was in the wrestling team. And in one of our matches against are rival school. Only two guys won their matches. I was one and the high school jock. What was unexpected was that it was announced over the school’s PA system. I never recalled that happening before. The other was when an earth quake hit In the morning. It was the first of what would be many over the years, but didn’t know that at the time. I went to school anyway to see if we were still going to have wrestling practice. But what I ended up doing was helping set up some of the classrooms for evacuating the patients from the hospital next door. Moving classroom desks,and moving addresses in. 20 plus years later another earth quake hit, thereby finishing of the campus once and for all. Then it was relocated to a closed down seminary across the street. Those events big or small are the ones that have stuck with me.
