As a first-year African American college student majoring in fashion design, I participated in my school's annual study-abroad fashion tour in New York. As encouraged by my instructors, my class and I were motivated to try on clothes from high-end brands. Seeing it as my first time being out of state, I wanted to enjoy every experience. In the women's department of the Ralph Lauren Store, I saw a beautiful corset top, ranging about $3,000 and a long beautiful skirt ranging around $7,000. It was a very beautiful set, and to try something so gorgeous and expensive would have been a dream for an aspiring fashion designer. I asked the employee in the video, if we were allowed to try things on to which she asked, “Are you purchasing to shop?” She additionally stated, “ If it's to shop, then, yes.” Mind you, I asked “we,” not only myself but my roommate, to which she still implied, that “I” couldn't try anything on unless I was purchasing to shop. As I didn't want to cause a scene, I walked away with my roommate, and we proceeded to ask an another employee if we were allowed to try on garments, and she stated that we were. With this information, I went back to ask for her name for further investigation on not only my behalf but the store. Overall, I felt defeated and discouraged, and I wanted to try these pieces on to feel as elegant as they looked. With that I not only felt disrespected and discriminated against, but I also felt as though she was judging my character and class. Considering that this was my first time in New York, and it would have been my first time trying on such an elegant piece at that price tag, made my overall trip a bummer. Unbeknownst to me, I wasnt aware that I was still recording, as I was trying to take pictures/videos of the garments. The overall situation made me uncomfortable, disheartened, and very much emotional.
