When Alois died in 1903, Adolf felt the chains break. He convinced his mother, Klara, to financially support his dream. When Alois died in 1903, Adolf felt the chains break. He convinced his mother, Klara, to financially support his dream. In September 1907, at 18 years old and with his pockets full of dreams (and his family inheritance), he moved to Vienna, the majestic capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, convinced that his natural genius would astonish the world. The young man arrived brimming with confidence for the entrance exam to the prestigious Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. He passed the first theoretical test, but the verdict on the practical drawing phase was devastating: "Unsatisfactory drawing. Few heads." The school director received him in his office and coldly explained that his skills lay not in artistic painting, but in the precision of lines. He recommended that he dedicate himself to architecture. That was a direct blow to his enormous ego. To study architecture, he needed a high school diploma, which he didn't have and was never willing to get back. To make matters worse, at the end of that same year (1907), his mother died of breast cancer. Completely alone and devastated, Hitler refused to accept the academics' verdict. He shared a small apartment with his only childhood friend, August Kubizek, from whom he hid his failure out of sheer shame. He spent his days wandering through museums, obsessively attending Richard Wagner's operas, and sketching utopian architectural plans of entire cities. In the autumn of 1908, he tried a second time. He took a new portfolio to the Academy, but the rejection was even more emphatic: the professors considered his work so subpar that they wouldn't even allow him to sit for the physical exam. The Academy forbade him from ever applying again. #historia #historytok #ww2 #germany
