Breaking news from Senegal. A Senegalese court has sentenced three TikTok content creators to prison for insulting President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. One was sentenced to three months in prison, while the other two received two-month prison sentences and fines of 500,000 CFA francs each. Their lawyer says the videos were intended as comedy, but the court disagreed. Now this raises a much bigger question: freedom of speech. President Faye came into office promising democratic reforms and greater freedoms. So here's my question. Should insulting a president really be a crime punishable by prison? I'm not talking about hate speech or inciting violence. I'm talking about criticism, satire, and even offensive political jokes. Because if politicians expect citizens to tolerate criticism during election campaigns, shouldn't they also be prepared to tolerate criticism after taking office? This isn't just about Senegal. It's a question for the whole of Africa. Should African democracies still have laws that send people to prison for insulting a president, or should freedom of expression include the right to offend those in power?
