@nealkshah: THIS backyard hobby may ADD years to your life... When researchers studied the world's "Blue Zones," the rare places where people routinely live past 100, from Okinawa to Sardinia to Loma Linda, they found one unexpected habit nearly all of them shared. These centenarians were still gardening well into their 80s, 90s, and beyond. And it is no coincidence. Gardening quietly bundles together almost everything that helps us live longer. It is gentle, consistent, low-impact exercise that builds strength, flexibility, and balance, which protects against falls. It gets you outside for fresh air, sunlight, and vitamin D, and it has been shown to lower the stress hormone cortisol, with research linking it to up to a 30% lower risk of heart disease and dementia. It gives you a steady stream of fresh, nutrient-dense vegetables you are far more likely to actually eat. And perhaps most powerfully, it provides a deep sense of purpose, that reason to get up each morning, which alone is tied to added years of life. You do not need acres, since even a few pots on a balcony count. Follow for more on aging well, and share this with someone who loves to garden. #Gardening #Longevity #HealthyAging

I started gardening in 2022. It’s naturally toned by body, and it helps me destress after work. Next year I’m starting a beehive. 🌼 🐝

Planting, trimming, mowing and general digging in the dirt since I retired is my happy place. I’m out there from last day of frost to first day of frost here in the PNW. I also do all the heavy work of mowing and trimming tree branches with a chainsaw. I’m sore, my arms and back hurt but I don’t care. I also have many pots of different sizes full of flowers. They need trimming, and watering.
