In July 2020, Nigerian official Professor Kemebradikumo Daniel Pondei suddenly collapsed during a televised parliamentary hearing while lawmakers questioned him over alleged financial mismanagement at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). Pondei had been questioned for about an hour when he slowly slumped forward onto the desk, bringing the hearing to an abrupt halt. The incident was broadcast live and quickly became one of the most discussed political moments in Nigeria that year. Professor Pondei is a Nigerian medical doctor and academic who served as the Acting Managing Director of the NDDC in 2020. Before his appointment, he was a Professor of Medicine at Niger Delta University and a former Provost of its College of Health Sciences. He was appointed Acting Managing Director in February 2020 by President Muhammadu Buhari, replacing Joy Nunieh. His appointment came at a time when the commission was facing growing public scrutiny over its finances and management. The July 2020 hearing was part of a National Assembly investigation into the commission’s expenditure. Lawmakers questioned the Interim Management Committee over allegations involving ₦81.5 billion in spending, including payments that attracted public attention. The collapse immediately generated reactions across Nigeria. Some people questioned whether Pondei had genuinely fallen ill, while others accused him of deliberately avoiding the investigation. However, the NDDC stated that he had been ill for two weeks and that his doctors had advised him not to attend the hearing. The commission said he was taken to a clinic in Abuja, where he was reported to be in stable condition. Pondei later spoke publicly about the incident, describing it as an unexpected health challenge and expressing shock that some Nigerians believed he had acted. He also disputed the amount attributed to his management, stating in an August 2020 interview that the interim management committees had spent ₦81.5 billion collectively, while the committee under his leadership spent ₦59.1 billion during its period in office. The controversy formed part of the wider scrutiny of the NDDC, which had been facing investigations and calls for a forensic audit of its activities.
