With the way Hansen constructed the image of "the predator" as basically exclusively a "weird" online stranger, instead of the overwhelmingly more common father/uncle/"trusted adult", you can draw a pretty direct line to the current mindset of the "protect the children" crowd, where it's ultimately fine that Trump is an abuser, but every queer person is a clear and present danger. Like I'm glad Primetime makes the connection to post 9/11 paranoia clear, but I just don't think the analysis is complete unless you make that final leap from what was to what is happening right now.

Totally agreed. The movie felt scared to be actually uncomfortable. Except opposite on the specifics. I actually liked the raid scene because it felt like the one moment the film actually sat in its emotion. It’s definitely sensationalized, but I do think it’s also the strongest - most upsetting moment. And then the sag card scene felt like a wry irony, back to ending on a joke

I think people need to stop coming into this movie expecting a critique, because that mindset distracts from what the movie really is, which is a self-reflection from the perspective of a documentarian. For someone like Lance Oppenheim, cranking up the sensationalism captures his emotional state better. A version of Primetime where the events are depicted as accurately banal might’ve been an interesting project, but for another filmmaker. I don’t think this movie was ever intended as an essay, but as a portrait

I think you just wanted the film to have an entirely different message. It never sought to portray what he was doing as boring, and it would be entirely wrong to do so. It played the content of the show as straight and as neutrally as it could: How the world saw the show. The point of the film was to add the layer of Hansen's motivations on top of what we knew the show to be, not change the show itself

I think its valid for the filmmakers to use use (albeit dark humor) because the subject matter alone is super depressing and we already have movies that cover those topics with a straight face. This felt like a method (whether intentional or not) to reach as many people as possible to listen.

I also think, hear me out, that the large majority of people consuming content now are not media literate. I believe that your take and discussion is incredibly accurate and *nuanced* which I'm not certain that newer audiences understand or process. I work in pediatric behavioral health, and the (honestly I'm not even sure I have the proper verbiage to address this) downfall (?) or (difficult self reflection?) or (reason to self reflect) is no more there now (despite having access to the Internet and information) than it was for the millennials/gen xers/boomers who were rooting for death by kangaroo court. we want accountability in a country that is overly incarcerated on the basis of who can provide the most free labor. and that's the honest truth. I'm an abolitionist, im a mother, I'm a social worker; Im happy to discuss world theories, paths forward, and compassionate conversations. but we have to have the honest reconciliation of: who are we protecting and who are we investing in for recovery.💜

I was really annoyed when I went looking for discussion on this movie and found nothing but disgruntled chuds. Nice to see at least one person still interested in talking about the art instead of the endless culture war

I had an opposite reaction to it: I was grateful for the moments of humor because it kept me there. The sheer grime of the whole enterprise was so bleak it was hard to witness at times. I came out of it feeling like how you said it didn’t make you feel. Hell of a time for me to have JUST cancelled my paramount plus subscription though because I’ve not seen that doc. I’m guessing if I’d seen it first I’d feel differently.

I liked the movies tone and tempo, but the biggest failure imo was its unwillingness to engage with the politics of pedophilia, especially in a post-Epstein world

yessss. i enjoyed it but i was like i dont think its saying anything new or meaningful that the intended audience doesn't already know? i felt like it was missing something. i told my friends that i thought it hated chris hansen too much to say anything we don't know, but i think you like precisely identified what it was!!
