As someone with a masters in finance where it has definitely paid off for me, college itself is not a scam. You can certainly make stupid decisions along the way to screw yourself financially as far as what you decide to study, what school you go to, how you fund your education and what your goal is and how long it takes you to graduate if you choose to change majors multiple times. If someone goes to school for art just because they love and want to learn more about art in a professional setting and want a degree out of it, and they’re okay with knowing the marketplace for that degree usually doesn’t have a good ROI, and they’re okay with that - that’s not a scam. At the end of the day, the goal of college is to learn and broaden your knowledge base. If your only goal is to learn in a professional setting with actual professors and you’re making good decisions and being smart about where you decide to go so it doesn’t financially cripple you, I don’t agree that getting a “low-ROI” degree is a scam because you’ve gotten what you wanted out of it.
