![Listen closely to the everyday language used in your school. Have you heard phrases like “the SDC student,” “my VSP student,” or “the RSP room”? Many of us have, and we may have used them ourselves. Most often, this is familiar shorthand used by caring educators who are trying to communicate quickly about schedules, staffing, and support. Program labels have an important purpose. The invitation is to notice when that shorthand begins to replace a student’s name, an educator’s identity, or a classroom’s connection to the larger school community. Every student brings a name, strengths, preferences, relationships, and a rightful place in the school community. Every educator brings expertise and belongs to the whole school team. Programs describe services. They do not define our students, staff, or classrooms. [Drop the walkie-talkie.] Inclusive leaders help teams notice these patterns with curiosity and care. Together, we can choose language that communicates dignity, belonging, and shared responsibility.
