@smallahmeat: A supersonic jet can appear to be silent from the ground until after it has passed because the aircraft is traveling faster than the pressure disturbances it creates can propagate through the air. Once the aircraft exceeds Mach 1. its individual pressure waves cannot spread ahead of it Instead, they pile together into a three- dimensional shock-wave pattern called a Mach cone, trailing behind the aircraft The angle of this cone depends on the aircraft's Mach number When that shock wave reaches ar observer on the ground, the sudden change in air pressure is heard as a sonic boom. The important detail is that the boom is not produced by the aircraft "breaking the sound barrier" at one particular instant; a supersonic aircraft continuously generates shock waves along its flight path. Because sound travels through the atmosphere at a much lower speed than the aircraft itself, the et can alreadv be far ahead-or even out of sight--when the shock wave reaches you. At 55,000 feet, NASA notes that a sonic boom can take almost a minute to reach the ground. Have you ever heard a sonic boom and realized the aircraft was already gone? #SupersonicFlight #SonicBoom #Physics #Aerodynamics #Science
Yeah cus that’s what happens when you travel faster than sound

Makes even more sense when you remember that sound is just pressure changes in the air, we all exist in a world full of invisible soup ✌

This is actually not true for supersonic jets that “throw” sound in the front direction instead of the back (as shown in video). A supersonic jet that “throws” sound ahead can actually be heard before it passes.

The acoustics aren't exact, they don't account for the sound waves bouncing off the ground, which creates a distinct rising pitch effect after the plane has passed you

Can you simulate how Boom supersonic plans to reduce noise by “bouncing” the waves off the atmosphere?

This is always a grievance of mine in tv shows/movies, fast characters appear out of thin air with no sonic boom or shockwave
