Some family trees grow the strangest branches when money falls out. Last year, an earthquake hit my family when my uncle died. But it wasn’t his death that tore us apart—it was what happened afterward. His siblings loaded up U-Hauls with everything he had spent his life working for before his children could get there. Apparently, grief moves slowly, but greed knows where to rent a truck. The damage went far beyond belongings. We will never speak again. Courts take time, and waiting can be brutal. But the one thing they claim to believe in is eternity. Whatever stories they tell, they know the truth. Rehearsing a story doesn’t turn it into an honest one. I thought time might make it harder for some people to look in the mirror. Somehow, they still find the strength to fix their hair and straighten their halos every morning. That must be exhausting—all that polishing while avoiding a reflection. At this point, I’m not sure who their God is. But if it’s the same as mine, they’d better button up those knickers—because the shit gets eternally deep when you preach one thing and live another. “Thou shalt not steal” apparently has fine print I haven’t seen. The greed and lies bothered me so much that I wrote not one, but TWO songs about it. Turns out you can haul away belongings, but you don’t get to haul away my voice. What happened to his belongings and his will is still disputed, but the damage to our family is undeniable. Please make sure your wishes are documented, and that more than one trusted person knows where to find your will. Make your wishes clear. Don’t leave your children guessing—or counting on everyone to do the right thing. A family name is no guarantee of family loyalty. Neither is a cross around somebody’s neck. #HalosDontHideGreed #InheritanceSinners #SundaySaints #GreedHasNoHalo #FamilyValuesOnTrial
