A maḥram is a close relative one is permanently forbidden to marry — such as a mother, sister, or daughter.) The Prophet ﷺ said: "Beware of entering upon women!" A man from the Anṣār then asked: "O Messenger of Allah, what about the ḥamw?" [i.e., the husband's male relative] He ﷺ replied: "The ḥamw is death." — Agreed upon (recorded by both al-Bukhārī and Muslim) 1. أي: الاختلاط بهن — "That is: mixing/being alone with them." 2. الحمو: أخو الزوج ونحوه من أقارب الزوج كابن العم — "Al-ḥamw refers to the husband's brother, or similar relatives of the husband such as his paternal cousin." 3. أي: دخوله مهلك كالموت، أي: أن خطره شديد — "Meaning: his entering upon her is as destructive as death — that is, its danger is severe." 4. متفق عليه — "Agreed upon," meaning both Imām al-Bukhārī and Imām Muslim recorded this ḥadīth in their respective Ṣaḥīḥ collections. In essence: the Prophet ﷺ warned against a non-maḥram man being alone with or freely mixing with women.
