@logic.word: Silent Collision Desolation Jean de La Bruyère (1645–1696) was a French essayist, moralist, and sharp observer of human behavior. Born in Paris, he studied law and later worked in France's financial administration. His life eventually brought him into the household of the Grand Condé, where he observed aristocratic society closely. That position gave him an unusually close view of ambition, vanity, status, flattery, and hypocrisy. He became known for turning these observations into precise portraits of human character. His most famous work, The Characters, was first published in 1688 and grew through successive editions. Rather than simply preaching moral lessons, he exposed human weaknesses through portraits, irony, comparisons, and sharp observations. He examined the distance between how people appear and what they are underneath. His writing repeatedly explored pride, social ambition, deception, vanity, and the contradictions of human conduct. This made him one of the major French moralists of the seventeenth century. La Bruyère was elected to the Académie française in 1693, despite facing opposition from literary rivals. He died at Versailles in 1696, leaving behind a literary legacy centered on the observation of human character. His work remains relevant because people still hide motives behind appearances, manners, status, and polished behavior.
