Kenya has confirmed its first case of Ebola after a Kenyan citizen who had lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for about seven years tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said the patient had been ill for about a month and had received treatment at several hospitals in the DRC before travelling by road to Kampala, Uganda, and then flying to Nairobi on a Jambojet flight that arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on 3 October. He later sought treatment at a Nairobi hospital, where doctors raised the alarm because of his symptoms and travel history. Laboratory tests subsequently confirmed Ebola, and the patient died on the night of 5 October. Authorities have identified 28 contacts, including family members and healthcare workers, who are being monitored, while efforts are underway to trace other passengers and crew who were on the same flight. A safe and dignified burial has been conducted under Ebola protocols. Kenya had remained on heightened alert because of the Ebola outbreak in the DRC, with officials saying surveillance, screening and health-worker preparedness measures were already in place. The government has urged Kenyans to remain calm, observe basic hygiene and report suspected symptoms rather than panic. The announcement has nevertheless triggered significant debate online, with some Kenyans questioning the timing and circumstances of the case. Social media discussions have included speculation about possible lockdowns, quarantine measures, political motives and the impact on the 2027 elections, while others have raised concerns about the economy, aviation and tourism. Some posts have also revived earlier controversy surrounding proposed Ebola-related facilities and Kenya’s broader relationship with international health and development partners. At the same time, others have urged the public to take the situation seriously given the ongoing outbreak in the DRC and focus on vigilance rather than conspiracy theories. #ebolainkenya #adendualeebola #ebolaoutbreakkenya #ebolaconfirmedinkenya #ebolacaseinkenyatoday
