This almost makes me sad that it only took me 1 letter to 3 institutions to get me signed out of the Dutch catholic church

Not sure if it is quite the same situation but in italy you can send a letter to the church where you were baptised and ask to be "de-baptised". I did it last year and they sent a letter back confirming that I had been removed from their registries; not sure why they're fighting your uncle on this

If memory serves, they lost in a French court for that same reason

I tried years ago (during Covid, I was bored) to have my details removed and they told me I couldn’t. Please update when your uncle hears back!

Good luck to your Uncle. Someone in Ireland tried this and they managed to block him. Couldn't get his name removed and couldn't sue. the Data Protection Commission ruled that the Church had legitimate interests and could keep the records. I hope your Uncle can change this. I want out of the church.

Who let the boss out? :
It won't be 2 million. That's the max the fine can be that the data protection body or the courts can fine. He won't get that. He'd have to show damage/a schedule of loss and the final number may be 1/4 of that number.

there is actually a process to "resign" your Catholic religion. It is called apostasia/apostasy. Not sure why they didn't orient them to this process

Heard they can cross your name but not "erase" it. as these data can be used for genealogy... would this even work, apparently archiving purpose can be exempted from gdpr ? (not that i wouldn't like this but mmmh)
