The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing is the world's largest wildlife bridge and is scheduled to open on December 2, 2026. Key Details Mule Deer Are Already Using California’s First Wildlife Crossing—and It’s Not Even Finished Yet Construction on the $20 million bridge in Siskiyou County began last year and is expected to be complete by this fall, with miles of eight-foot-high fencing along the highway to help funnel animals toward it Mule deer have been photographed wandering over an in-progress overpass in Siskiyou County, located in Northern California near the Oregon border. Construction on the $20 million bridge started in July 2025 and is expected to wrap up by this fall. Nearly 100 cameras have been installed in and around the crossing, and in late May, one of them captured three mule deer using the structure. World’s largest wildlife crossing nears opening in California New photos show the nearly completed Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, which is scheduled to open Dec. 2 and give animals a safe route across 10 lanes of the U.S. 101 freeway. The world's largest wildlife animal crossing in California is less than two months away from opening, with teams finalizing construction of the now $114 million vegetated bridge. Opening on Dec. 2, the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing is a 210-foot-long bridge in Agoura Hills that will span 10 lanes of the U.S. 101 freeway. Growing from $92 million due to inflation, construction complexity and labor shortages, the project will help animals including coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions and foxes cross safely. New images show updates to the construction, one of the milestones being the completion of the concrete deck on the bridge that extends across Agoura Road. This achievement involved a multi-agency effort to move telecommunication and high-voltage power lines, as well as upgrade and reroute a regional waterline, the Los Angeles Times reported. Teams also drilled and built dozens of 75-foot-deep concrete pile structures along the road, ensuring not to disturb two natural creeks and dozens of heritage oak trees nearby. Project partners said in a final update before the opening that they have already seen animals such as coyotes and bobcats in the bridge area, despite the ongoing construction. Scientists also plan to use a new tracking technology called bio loggers on animals like deer to collect physiological data. Monitoring conditions such as heart rate will help researchers determine whether animals become stressed when using the crossing. #muqdisho #somaliland #garowe_puntland_🇸🇱🇸🇱 #garowe @Zuhuur Puntlander @Cumeer BigFan @Omar Artan 🇸🇴 @Diini mohamed Dahir ✪🇸🇴 @Fiqiyada.umuahzab🇸🇱🩸🐍
