@scottishbanter1: A huge milestone for Scotland’s wildcats 🐾 Fifty wildcats have now been released into the Cairngorms National Park since the Saving Wildcats project began releases in 2023, with four more joining the population this summer. And there are encouraging signs that it’s working. Females have now given birth in the wild for three years in a row, suggesting a new population is beginning to establish itself naturally in the Highlands. There’s still a long way to go. Wildcats remain critically endangered in Scotland, and 11 of the released animals have died so far, including five in vehicle collisions. The project plans further releases to increase both numbers and genetic diversity, with the ultimate aim of establishing a healthy, self-sustaining wildcat population in Scotland once again. If the law could change to protect cats (yes and wild ones) to the same degree as dogs, maybe it would lower the amount of people aiming to kill them on the roads. People will do anything if they are legally allowed.
