#outside #smile #fun You know, one of the greatest resources a person can have is an acquaintance. How do we teach our children to walk into a school building full of people they don't know and expect them to make friends? How do we expect someone to walk into a grocery store alone, do their shopping, and walk out? How do we expect someone to drive down the street, apply for a job, or build relationships with people they've never met? We can't raise our children to believe that everyone they don't know is a danger. We have to teach them how to navigate the world, recognize boundaries, understand right from wrong, and recognize when something doesn't feel right. And let's be honest, danger doesn't always come from a stranger. Sometimes it's someone familiar. Sometimes it's someone in a position of authority. Sometimes it's even someone standing behind a pulpit. You truly never know simply by looking at someone. So when it comes to trunk-or-treat, I think we have to look at the bigger picture. We're teaching our children that it's okay to approach people, say hello, and accept a piece of candy in a supervised, community setting. That's not necessarily a bad lesson. It's an opportunity to teach them about different environments, circumstances, and boundaries. And if you happen to see my children out in public after a trunk-or-treat and feel inclined to say hello, please do. There's nothing wrong with a friendly face or a kind greeting. But I also wonder how much we expect children to remember. How can you expect a child to recognize someone they briefly encountered in a parking lot, possibly in a costume, among dozens of other people, in a world where everyday faces come and go? The goal shouldn't be to teach our children to fear the world outside their front door. It should be to teach them how to live in it safely. Because eventually, they have to walk out that door without us.
