@inmind71: How rare is a human rebirth in Buddhism? The Buddha compared beings reborn as humans to the tiny amount of soil on the tip of a fingernail compared with the whole earth. He also gave the famous blind turtle simile: a blind turtle rises from a vast ocean only once every hundred years, while a single-holed yoke drifts across the surface. The chance of the turtle placing its neck through that hole illustrates how extraordinarily difficult it can be to regain the human state after falling into a lower realm. But human birth is only part of the opportunity. The Buddha also spoke of the rarity of a fully awakened Buddha arising in the world, the Dhamma being available, and having the conditions to hear, understand, and practise it. In the lower realms, suffering leaves little opportunity to cultivate wholesome conduct and merit that could support a better rebirth. So the teaching is not simply that human life is precious. It is that this opportunity should not be wasted. Seize the opportunity. Make the effort. Do not let the time for practice pass unused.
