He was born on 13 March 1941 in al-Birwa, a Palestinian village in the Galilee. In 1948. during the Palestinian Nakba, his family was forced to leave their home. When they later returned, their village had been destroyed. and Darwish grew up carrying a feeling that would follow him throughout his life: the painful distance between a person and the place they call home. As a young man, he began writing poetry and became one of the most important literary voices of the Palestinian experience. His poetry was not only about politics-it was about identity, memory, love, death, belonging. and the human need for a homeland. Darwish spent years living in exile and moving between different countries. Yet wherever he went. Palestine remained present in his imagination. He turned homeland into something larger than geography: a memory, a language, a childhood, and sometimes even a dream. His writing often carried a strange mixture of beauty and sorrow. He could write about love while speaking about war, or describe a homeland while questioning what it means to belong anywhere at all. Among his most famous works are Identity Card. Why Did You Leave the Horse Alone?. Mural, and in the Presence of Absence. Darwish died on 9 August 2008 in Houston. Texas, after heart surgery. He was 67. But his poetry never truly left.
