21 October 1966 — The Aberfan Disaster On the morning of Friday 21 October 1966, the children of Pantglas Junior School had just arrived for lessons. It was the last day before half-term. Many had already packed their bags, excited for the break ahead. At 9:15 am, after days of heavy rain, a massive colliery spoil tip situated 700 feet above the village became saturated and unstable. Over 150,000 tonnes of water-saturated shale and debris slid down the mountainside at high speed. It smashed through trees, crossed the river, and engulfed Pantglas Junior School and several neighbouring houses. The slurry buried the school almost completely. Inside, 116 children and 5 teachers lost their lives. 28 adults also died that day — parents, neighbours, rescuers, and residents of the village. The devastation was total. What followed was one of the greatest rescue efforts ever seen in Wales. Miners, villagers, and people from across the country rushed to help dig through the mud in freezing conditions, hoping against hope to find survivors. Tragically, most did not make it out. Today marks 60 years. The grief has not faded. The people of Aberfan rebuilt, but they never forgot. Every year, the village gathers at the cemetery and the memorial garden — where the school once stood — to remember the lives lost, the families broken, and a community that showed the world what strength really means. 116 children. 28 adults. Gone in moments. Forever in our hearts. We will never forget. 🕊️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 #Wales #southwales #aberfan #aberfantragedy #aberfandisaster
