@rarehistory5: Captain Robert Campbell of the East Surrey Regiment was captured by German forces in August 1914 during the fighting around Mons. After being wounded, he was treated in Cologne and eventually transferred to a prisoner-of-war camp in Magdeburg. Two years into his captivity, Campbell received devastating news: his mother, Louisa, was gravely ill with cancer. He wrote directly to Kaiser Wilhelm II requesting permission to return to England and see her. In an extraordinary act of wartime compassion, the Kaiser approved his request, but only after Campbell gave his word as a British officer that he would return. With assistance from the neutral American Embassy, Campbell traveled through the Netherlands and crossed by ferry to Britain. He spent roughly a week with his mother before making the journey back to Germany, voluntarily returning to captivity as promised. Remarkably, Campbell did not consider his pledge a promise never to escape. After fulfilling the specific agreement, he and several other prisoners spent months digging a tunnel out of their camp. They escaped and headed toward the Dutch border, but Campbell was recaptured and imprisoned once more. His decision to return remains an extraordinary example of the military code of honor that existed even between enemies during World War I. Added Fact: Campbell survived the war, remained in the British Army until 1925 and died on the Isle of Wight in 1966 at age 81.

Of course he survived the war, he spent most of it as a POW. Giving your parole, I.e. promising to return if allowed out of camp was very common even in WW2. There is a story of a British airman who crashed his spitfire in Donegal and was interned in the Curragh camp. They were frequently allowed out, having given their parole to return. Of course many Brits hopped on a train to Belfast, but one chap couldn’t bear the dishonour so he left a glove on the desk of the guard hut, left, came back to pick up the “forgotten” glove fulfilling the parole, and then just walked out.
