PS from a dog groomer a lot of dogs do this 🥲 I'll take a few steps back when I see them start to shake and then they'll stop till I get near them again

I taught my little dog after I hold a towel up to shake bc of this. I hate water everywhere. we do it about three or 4 times then I rub her down with the towel. it's very handy

According to dog's psychology, she delayed the shake because when you hid behind the door you changed the communication and showed a defensive behaviour, so she's trying to understand what's going on. Dogs are extremely routine animals, so anything you do out of that regular ritual catches their attention. Most dogs see the use of the towel as representing the end of the bath ritual, so she's probably expecting you to go to the next step, give a command, a sign. When this is not clear they observe you to see what you'll do next and try to understand why you changed from the normal process, thus delaying the part where she shakes (usually when you bring the towel). Dogs are funny when we look at them from a human perspective, but the way their brain works is actually fascinating
