Our fees are insane. If you combine res fees with the tuition fees, you end up having to pay the institution about R170k for a YEAR. Most of the students are nsfas students and nsfas only caps at about R50k maximum for accommodation. So students are left with about R40k-R50k of debt PER YEAR, and the university expects them to pay back 50% before registration the next year. It's extremely exclusionary and classist because only students of affluent backgrounds csn keep up with the insane fees and register for the next year without outstanding debt

People are so out of touch with reality. Varsity is so expensive guys. There is a small percentage of people who can afford; even those who can afford/manage with fees, it’s not to say that the fees aren’t steep hey. Some are just privileged to be able to cater to this bracket. Nsfas’ food allowance alone has not even kept with the times. It has not even increased yet cost of living and fees have increased.

This country is really a welfare country... all of a sudden... nobody wants to pay for nothing... how will this country survive...if people just want all the time... some parents actually paid for their children's education..why can't you try it sometime..

This is going to sound different but, university is a privilege. The parents that pay fees without help did not start saving at Matric, or even when their child started high school. They start saving at birth. I had a friend at varsity, his Father passed away when he was 3, he put his entire life policy in a trust for his son to attend university. Life is extremely unfair, that is why so many people plan. I also have colleagues who have been paying back NSFAS for almost 2 decades. 1 degree. And worse still, quality of life and mental health struggles from the economic burden they place on their families once they are at varsity is unbelievable.

A public university charging such high fees is something I will never understand about the south African higher education system.
