@lizasamuellcsw: The fear of abandonment does not go away by finding someone who will never leave. It goes away by learning you can survive if they do. Because a lot of people are not just afraid of losing a relationship. They are afraid of what losing it would mean about them. What it would trigger. What it would reopen. How alone, rejected, unlovable, or unsafe it might make them feel. So they cling. Over accommodate. Stay too long. Abandon themselves to avoid being abandoned by someone else. But healing is realizing your worth was never dependent on someone choosing to stay. And honestly, there is something incredibly freeing about knowing you can love deeply without losing yourself in the process. What do you wish someone had told you years ago? What’s one thing you hope the next generation never has to unlearn?
I’m just realized last week I am so terrified of others abandoning me, that I abandon myself to accommodate them. And that is the scary thing… abandoning myself. How scary to love myself so little that I would abandon her. Never again!
