@vagabondartist: Unbelievable octopus encounter last night, one of which may have been a female looking to mate. (1) was a large octopus that appeared to be female blanketed atop a coral head on a large reef outcropping. It appreared to be asleep with its arms wrapped around itself and eyes “closed” and did not move even when we approached. (2-4) were 3 smaller octopus all below here on the same outcropping. Very active. That’s very unusual to have 2 let alone 4 octopus in close proximity. All stayed around for a long time as two came over to me and touched my hand and I’ve grabbed on and pulled. One was a male but I couldn’t coffin the other two. A 2026 study found females emit a pheromone when ready to mate that makes can detect and cause them to actively search for the female. But because I was unable to chick the sexes and did not observe mating I can’t be certain that is what was happening here. (5) was in the channel coming back towards the house and was just a baby. Very cute. Long arms with an underdeveloped webbing between its arms. Great encounters. #octopus #animals #roatan #utila #scuba
