I remember when this movie came out. They had the scene in the trailer that explained bucket list meant everything you wanna do before you kick the bucket. Everyone was confused when they saw the title then was like oh okay that’s what it means when they saw the trailer because it was definitely NOT a common term before that

People have way too much confidence in their memories. Same as "Sweet Summer Child" comes from the Game of Thrones books/shows and people insist that their grandma said this phrase even though it doesnt make any sense without the context of Westeros culture around year long seasons.

I remember the first time I heard the phrase was in the movie trailer. I thought it was funny that it so quickly became part of our everyday language. I’m 43. Is it more younger people who think this phrase was around before that?

I don't know why people find this one hard to believe. If the term bucket list was a well known phrase that people used before the movie then they wouldn't have to explain what it means in the movie.

I think it’s because the idea feels so normal. People have had “things they want to do before they die” for centuries. It’s just that it wasn’t given a term until the movie. It’s mentioned in Fight Club even

Side note, I always thought "kick the bucket" came from the idea of standing on a bucket to hang yourself, and then kicking it away (like one would with a chair). Is that not true? Sorry to be morbid!

I feel the same about Debbie Downer. I swear people used it before the SNL skit. No proof tho. I think people just remember wrong and actually remember remembering and that loses chronological context.
