@theugandareport: Stuart Katebariirwe Ibingira (1932-1995) - *Born:* 23 May 1932 in Ibanda, Ankole — son of a Gombolola chief. -Education: Mbarara High School, King's College Budo, Law at University of Wales Aberystwyth (magna cum laude), postgraduate at University of London, called to the Bar at Middle Temple in 1959. - Co-founder of UPC: In 1960, co-founded Uganda People's Congress with Milton Obote and Abu Mayanja. Became its Legal Adviser. - First Justice Minister: After Independence in 1962, Obote made him Minister of Justice and Attorney General. - Designed Uganda's Flag: Chaired the committee that designed the national flag. - Power struggle: At 1964 Gulu Delegates Conference, he beat John Kakonge to become Secretary General of UPC — leading the conservative wing vs Kakonge's left wing. - 966 Crisis: Fell out with Obote, accused of plotting to overthrow him. Obote arrested him and 4 other ministers in Feb 1966, suspended the constitution. - Later career: After release in 1971 by Idi Amin, served as Uganda's Ambassador to the UN (New York). Briefly Minister of Information in 1979 after Amin fell. - Died:December 1995. He was known as one of the most brilliant, charismatic orators of early Uganda — but also a symbol of how UPC infighting led to the 1966 constitutional crisis. #UgHistory #Uganda #Africanhistory #foryou
