If your iPhone goes missing, it should know how to check in with you. Your iPhone already has GPS, cameras, text messaging, and a built-in automation tool called Shortcuts. So I taught mine to recognize a specific code phrase from a trusted contact and respond with its current location and photos of what's happening around it. Because if my phone disappears, I'd appreciate a little communication. Here's how to set it up. 1. Create a message automation. Open the Shortcuts app, create a new automation, and select Message as the trigger. This tells your iPhone to watch for an incoming text that meets your conditions. 2. Choose a trusted contact. Under Sender, select someone you trust. This restricts the automation so it only responds to messages from that person. 3. Give your iPhone a code phrase. Add a condition where Message Contains a specific phrase, like

Add a condition where Message Contains a specific phrase, like "StatusCheck8921." Make up your own unique code so the automation doesn't activate during an ordinary conversation. 4. Set it to run automatically. Turn off Confirm Before Run so your iPhone doesn't ask for permission when the matching message arrives. 5. Get your phone's current location. Add the Get Current Location action so the shortcut knows where your device is when it receives the message. 6. Take photos with both cameras. Add a Take Photo action for the back camera, then duplicate it and change the second action to the front camera. Turn off Show Camera Preview on both so your iPhone takes the photos without opening the camera preview. 7. Send everything back to your trusted contact. Add a Send Message action. Under Recipients, select the Message variable, then tap Message and choose Sender. Add your current location and both photos to the message field using Select Variable. Turn off Show Compose Sheet so the message sends automatically. Once you've configured everything, test the automation with your trusted contact and make sure the location and both photos arrive. A few things to keep in mind: Your phone needs to be powered on, connected, and able to execute the shortcut. This isn't a replacement for Find My or your iPhone's built-in security protections. And because the automation accesses your cameras and location, choose your trusted contact carefully, keep your code private, and disable the automation when you don't need it. So if your iPhone disappears, your trusted contact has a way to request a check-in without needing to unlock your phone or open an app. Because your phone knows where it is. The least it could do is tell someone. We have standards. Grab my iPhone Check-in Shortcut from the link in my bio, and follow for more ways to give your iPhone an actual job. #iPhoneTips #AppleShortcuts #iPhoneShortcuts #iPhoneSafety #iPhoneAutomation
