@mind_yourboundaries: PART 2 of 2: Has your spouse ever said “that’s just the way they are” when defending their parents? Or maybe even you have? I’m sure I’ve done this to Ryan, early in our marriage. If I could go back I’d slow down and explain what I meant. I know it can be used as a way to comfort, but it also can be used to avoid a touchy topic. Dodging things they may have to confront with their parents. I think here we have a woman joining a family that’s VERY affectionate, close, and in each others business. They’ve operated a certain way up to the point that’s worked for them. For example, the way her husband responded to his mom’s worries says a lot. But just because he accommodated those worries (in the past) to calm her down DOES NOT mean his wife has to. If the talk doesn’t go well, I highly recommend couples therapy so that your husband learns how to put you first while staying close with his parents. Truly, it all comes down to knowing you’re on the same page, you run your lives, and you get to decide how much, if any, you want to absorb. We hope this helps! Please keep us posted and may you have a VERY safe pregnancy and delivery. PSA - This story was shared for educational and reflective purposes only. Heavy Metal Momma 🍉🍉🇬🇧 :
As a doctor FIL should already be extremely practiced at asking for permission to touch someone's body, it should be ingrained. It's kinda concerning it's not.

A Dr should know to keep his hands to himself! I fully disagree with that apart of the take.

Dr should know this isn't a Dr office so he should know how inappropriate touching her belly without permission.

I think that the issue is that the in-laws and husband aren’t being considerate or thinking about how she feels. Their motivations are relevant, sure, but they are being incredibly inconsiderate. Sometimes intent isn’t as important as impact.

Um, if he’s a doctor he should know that boundary of unsolicited medical advice

I look at like the in-laws love her so much they are treating her like their own biological daughter. Nothing they did is out of place from that. The gal needs to reciprocate and instead of stepping on eggshells around them, needs to speak her mind in a loving way. “Mom I’m so happy you are excited about baby and I love the concern from you yada yada but what I need is xyz. Dad same thing”. Then her hubby needs to back her up 100% as you already said.

I think the conversation need to be had with the parents, not the wife. They need to be told "we understand you love us and we love you BUT....." they are the ones that need to correct their behavior. It's not the DILs job to correct her way of thinking.

I think there is inner dynamics between members because the same sentence can be interpreted in so many depending how you feel about the person. Is there a silent conflict and quiet resentment bubbling that's needed to be addressed?

Her husband saying these magic words would make all the difference, "Yes, this is my family, and, you will never have to manage this alone."

Huh? The FIL did NOT sound analytical. “You won’t fit thru the doorway, youll gain 40-50lb [based on single individual Diane]” is NOT proper, up to date (UpToDate iykyk) medical advice nor is it analytical/statistical. He sounds patronizing as hell and unaware. I’d be annoyed & extremely offended if my doc treated me that way.

Jess- I completely agree on your take!! I think you are spot on. FIL may be a DR, but with DIL, he has a personal relationship.

she needs to speak up. young women never speak up. and once you do, if they don't stop just cut them off. maybe ditch the husband

Ehhh doc should know better than to touch people without permission. I actually think this is a huge red flag. I didn’t take it as creepy but more possessive- he feels entitled to touch her because it’s his grandchild in his mind. Just my POV

Caw-lean :
My doctor asks for my consent before touching me. That should be habit for a doctor. If it hasn't been the norm for him to touch her body before, it shouldn't be the norm now.

LCWA :
They are treating her like furniture. They may not have bad intentions but intentions =\= impact. It is her husband’s job to manage his family and if he can’t she will have to distance herself and reconsider her relationship. This will extend to her children too. What about when Grandpa is touching the kids in ways they don’t like? What about when Grandma is prying into their private space? Is her husband going to step up or continue to tell her to suck it up?

Doctors DO NOT touch you without asking permission…… touching the DIL is no different….. maybe they aren’t weird but he is making her feel weird and that’s worse

Tell the in laws to knock it the phuck off. No need to tip toe around it.
