The EOTC itself apologized for failing to call for an end to the war sooner and for failing to be present with those who suffered. That failure deserves accountability. But suffering does not give bishops unlimited authority to divide the Church. The EOTC Holy Synod opposed the independent bishop appointments, stating that they violated the Church’s constitution and harmed its unity. That is the canonical dispute these leaders need to answer. TOTC’s reported response that its leaders could not be excommunicated because they were “the founders of the Orthodox church” does not resolve that dispute. Historical importance is not permission to act above Church discipline. Axum’s Christian heritage deserves respect. But inheriting an ancient tradition is different from personally founding it. That heritage cannot, by itself, prove that today’s independent ordinations were authorized. This principle also applies to what happened in Oromia in January 2023, when three archbishops ordained 26 monks as bishops without the approval of the Holy Synod or the permission of the Patriarch. The Synod condemned those ordinations as violations of the Church’s canons and administrative order. Although that dispute later reached a reconciliation agreement, the original decision to bypass synodal authority deserves scrutiny. Ordaining a bishop is a responsibility governed by the Church’s canons and shared authority. Bishops cannot simply bypass that authority because they disagree with other Church leaders. Such actions are deeply wrong whether they involve Tigrayan leaders, Oromo leaders, or anyone else. The same standard must apply to everyone. Political situations change, but the Church’s unity should not change with every political conflict. Our faith must guide our response to politics. Political loyalties and ethnic divisions must not become excuses to disregard the Church’s order. Christ prayed “that they all may be one” (John 17:21), and St. Paul asked, “Is Christ divided?” (1 Corinthians 1:13). Before we defend division in the name of our people, we must ask ourselves: Would we condemn the same actions if another group committed them? And if preserving the Church’s unity requires us to challenge our own political loyalties, which are we willing to surrender our politics or our unity in Christ?
