A Tennessee man will spend the rest of his life behind bars for a deadly shooting that shook the city of Chattanooga in September 2023. A judge sentenced suspect Darryl Roberts on Monday to 90 years in prison: 60 for murder and 30 for a firearm charge. A jury convicted Roberts in April of murdering Christopher Wright on Market Street after a night of drinking turned violent. Surveillance video captured the moment Roberts pulled a gun and shot Wright at point-blank range. Testimony revealed the two men had a heated verbal altercation moments before the shooting, when Wright walked by Roberts and his friend on the sidewalk. Roberts later claimed Wright used a racial slur, but his friend testified that wasn't true. Both Wright and Roberts were reportedly intoxicated at the time. At Monday’s sentencing, Wright’s loved ones described their heartbreak. His mother, Janet, called Roberts “an empty shell of a person filled with evil,” while his best friend recalled the agony of Wright’s young children learning their father would never come home. Wright leaves behind a wife and three children.
