The reason babies don’t say “say” is because when you’re telling them what to say, you’re elongating the word you want them to say, making them focus on that word instead of “say”. In case anyone’s actually curious

Same reason you can tell a toddler ‘don’t drop that” and they will throw whatever down fast. They only hear the last part

Because people usually put a lot of emphasis on those words like “say MA-MA or DA-DA” and then they say that over and over again

Understanding language comes before speaking language, it's different areas of the brain and one develops before the other. Learned this in my Developmental Psychology class.

I dont think any parent only says “say dada” they would continue by repeating “dada” over and over again

because most parents repeat the specific word more. if you keep saying one word, whether its paired with others or not, the baby is going to more likely latch onto the one you say most. thats why my little brother learned to say fuck before he learned to say mom 👍

they don't 😭 sometimes when my nephew wants us to do something, he'll include the say (ex: "say tickle" when he wants us to tickle him)

I think they probably at that point have developed a basic intuitive understanding that the word “say” is acting as a means of encouraging them to do something

in pretty sure it's because of the entonation of the word, since when you are teaching a child to speak you say the word you want them to repeat in a higher pitch and say it a little louder and longer. And then the baby picks up on that and repeat the word that caught it's attention the most.
I'm not an expert it's a theory, I'm sorry if I'm wrong don't shoot me pls I have a family
