Lived in and around Birmingham my whole life. Wish I'd learnt about this earlier - truly shocking.

We need to stop saying “times were different”. Slavery was deeply controversial and bitterly contested in the newspapers of the time. The slave owners knew it was immoral and yet continued- they were aware and did it anyway.

I worked as a teacher in Birmingham. We spoke about the Lunar Society, James Watt etc all the time and never covered the slavery aspect to the industrial revolution. This needs to be taught and I wish it was

I’m truly blown away by this information. I genuinely thought I ‘knew’ Birmingham history - but clearly a big part has been hidden. Thank you so much for this. You should do tours!

It's really easy to dismiss the impact Birmingham had because we're not Liverpool or Bristol but our part was no less horrific.

Brilliant work. So insightful my family are from Handsworth. I knew some of manufacturing history within the city. But I did not know the city's intimate link with colonialism. My grandma lived two doors down from Soho house. Exemplary work. Thanks for sharing 🙏

For anyone that wants to read more, Eric Williams book called 'capitalism and slavery' is an excellent read and goes into depth on how all uk cities grew with money made from the slave trade
