Aristotle and other traditional thinkers maintained that men were, by nature, better endowed with rational judgment, self-control, authority, and leadership, while women were considered more prone to emotion, dependence, and weaker independent judgment. Therefore, they advocated for women’s subordination and dependence on men as part of what they believed to be the natural order of marriage and the household. Male authority was understood to entail obligations. The husband was expected to provide for the family, protect it, manage the household, and take responsibility for the family. Women were expected to center their lives on marriage, the home, and raising children. Both were expected to curb their personal desires for the sake of family stability. The underlying fear was that unlimited individual autonomy would allow personal desires and interests to destroy family stability. What those traditional values and beliefs feared has become evident in modern society. The rejection of traditional roles has not eliminated human frailty. What it has done is eliminate the structures designed to curb it. What was once condemned as rebellion now creates the disorder that, as those traditions warned, would result from abandoning that discipline.
