🐔 GUMBORO DISEASE (IBD) — A Practical Guide for Broiler Farmers Gumboro / Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD) is a highly contagious viral disease of broiler chickens. It mainly affects the Bursa of Fabricius, the important immune organ of young birds. The disease can cause sudden mortality, poor performance and severe immunosuppression. 🔴 COMMON CLINICAL SIGNS: • Sudden depression and weakness • Birds sitting and reluctant to move • Ruffled feathers • Reduced feed intake • Increased water consumption • Whitish/watery diarrhea • Soiled vent • Dehydration • Sudden increase in mortality in severe cases 🔬 POST-MORTEM LESIONS: • Bursa may be enlarged and edematous in the acute stage • Hemorrhages may appear on the Bursa • Later, the Bursa can become severely atrophied • Dehydration and kidney changes may be observed • Petechial hemorrhages can occur in breast/thigh muscles in severe cases 🦠 HOW DOES GUMBORO SPREAD? IBDV spreads mainly through the fecal-oral route. Contaminated litter, footwear, clothing, equipment, crates, workers and farm surroundings can carry the virus from one area to another. ⚠️ IMPORTANT: There is NO specific antibiotic that kills the Gumboro virus. Antibiotics do not cure IBD itself. Their use should only be considered by a poultry veterinarian when secondary bacterial infection is suspected or confirmed. 💧 SUPPORTIVE MANAGEMENT: • Maintain clean and cool drinking water • Correct dehydration and electrolyte imbalance • Provide electrolytes and supportive vitamins according to veterinary advice • Maintain proper ventilation and temperature • Keep litter dry and manage ammonia • Reduce unnecessary stress and handling • Monitor feed and water intake closely • Record mortality several times a day • Investigate sudden mortality immediately 🛡️ PREVENTION & FARM MANAGEMENT: • Follow a proper IBD vaccination program • Vaccination timing should be based on maternal antibody level, farm history and local disease pressure • Maintain strict biosecurity • Control movement of workers and equipment between sheds • Use proper footwear and disinfectant procedures • Thoroughly clean and disinfect the house between flocks • Avoid mixing different ages unnecessarily • Control rodents, wild birds and other contamination sources 📌 FARMER’S KEY POINT: If birds show depression + watery diarrhea + dehydration + sudden mortality, do not diagnose Gumboro from symptoms alone.
