I returned home from Palermo a few days ago. It is an intense, real, authentic, and charismatic city. Beyond the main tourist routes, we wandered through narrow streets like this one. People live there, too—just like anywhere else in the world. I fell in love with Palermo; its history and culture run deep. I look forward to visiting again. Unfortunately, I likely could never live anywhere other than where I do now. I return to Sicily year after year, and I find Palermo a thousand times more appealing than Taormina—that hyped-up, polished spot designed for tourists.

Like any major city, Palermo has areas like that, but it also has very safe districts. I visited with my niece this year; we only strayed from the safe path once, but since it was two against one, so nothing happened. We had a wonderful time in the safe neighborhoods.
