@offenceregister: Jon Venables Granted Private Parole Hearing Over Safety Concerns 👇 FULL CASE DETAILS BELOW 👇 Child killer Jon Venables, who tortured and murdered two-year-old James Bulger in 1993, will have his upcoming parole hearing conducted in private despite formal pleas from the victim’s mother, Denise Fergus. Venables, now aged 44, was convicted alongside Robert Thompson after the pair abducted two-year-old James from a shopping centre in Bootle, Merseyside, when they were both 10 years old. Venables was released on life licence in 2001 with lifelong anonymity, but was recalled to prison in 2010 and again in 2017 after police uncovered indecent images of children in his possession. A previous parole bid in late 2023 was rejected after the panel ruled Venables still posed an ongoing danger to children. Denise Fergus and multiple media organisations requested an open hearing in the interests of justice and to combat public misinformation. However, the Parole Board refused the application, ruling that public proceedings could expose Venables to individuals seeking to identify and kill him, making it impossible for him to give evidence safely. Under national justice reforms, Denise Fergus has been granted permission to observe the private oral hearing.
