I love ethical breeding/dogs almost as much as I love my neighborhood project rescue dog. It’s about ✨balance✨ It’s never a bad thing to save a life from euthanasia, but on the other hand it is also so so so good to have an ethically bred dog.

Yeah, I know, I am a adopt and don’t shop person. Breeders will never be at the point where they are in dire need to push out puppies. They will always have people buying their puppies, shelter, dogs that are beautiful, intelligent, smart, and amazing animals are always overlooked and pushed to the side for something younger and newer when they have just as much worth, I’ve adopted and rescued all of my animals and I always will.

I think this depends. Shopping from reputable sources when you’re educated and smart about it is different from shopping from backyard breeders, which is what the statement generally refers to. Adopting isn’t for everyone because of some of the risks but that’s fine, but buying from animal abusers isn’t okay in any case.

I say it a lot but for that’s for people who don’t need a service or working dog. There also really aren’t many ethical breeders now a day. At least in my opinion… my standards are very high. But there is nothing wrong with ethical breeders and ethical shopping.

i agree with adopting when someone needs you, but i also agree with shopping because some adopters have certain living conditions, like how a mal needs PLENTY of exercise. some people arent able to give them that while others can. all breeds have different qualities that fit different people.

What’s even worse is someone said don’t get a dog unless it’s for working 😭 like seriously, they said don’t adopt, don’t shop, just don’t get a dog unless you need one for working..

the meaning of shop in this saying is referencing unethical breeders and puppy mills. that should be a given i feel, so ABSOLUTELY adopt dont shop 😭 not sure if youre trying to imply some kind of alternative meaning from this saying, or if you genuinely dont understand the phrase .

Buy responsibly 👏🏼 few grand later I had my import. Was literally the BEST dog I have ever owned. Rock solid temperament, drive, Off switch, could trust her with anybody, any animal, in any place.

i feel like i’d be more open to shelters if they got more funding or something. we adopted a pit from a shelter and it’s truly been hell. she’s super sweet but her allergies and skin issues are extreme. i know it’s common for pitties to have allergies but i’ve owned them my whole life and they’ve never once had them (bought from breeders). we still love her of course but it’s not something we were prepared to deal with and there weren’t any signs (the shelter environment masked her allergies) and they didn’t do any extensive blood work. it just kind of feels like you don’t get the full story of the dog.

Yeah I think it can depend. I think it’s understandable to not want a random 3 year old dog

So what’s your solution to the endless dogs being euthanized for space everyday??? The overpopulation? Just screw all dogs currently living in 4x8 kennels 22 hours a day??

Hotter take- I think you’re very entry-level in your education journey in animal welfare. Why do we have pet overpopulation in the first place, the issue that brought on the phrase “adopt don’t shop”? Because of A) people breeding unethically in mass, and B) ignorance from the general public as to how to source dogs ethically. Primarily, it’s issue B. If byb’s made not a dime, they wouldn’t exist. Therefore, it starts with the customer. Ignorance and pride is a hurdle most people will never overcome, which again, is the reason we are in this mess to begin with. Therefore, you have to force their hand. If Jane Doe wants a doodle, you bet your ass she’s gonna get one. Is it better that she know “adopt don’t shop”, and get a rescue doodle or go to a breeder? You know that answer. These people can’t be given the leniency of “shopping responsibly”. To them, that means going to an Amish breeder for their 4th labradoodle. Not everyone is capable of forming profound viewpoints about things like this. So make what’s mainstream primarily beneficial- which I agree is “adopt don’t shop”. Among people who will do the research and will do the work, it evolves into “adopt or shop responsibly.”
