So many times a direct report has asked me to help them progress in their career. I will gladly go to bat for you, I’ll kick down doors for you. But if I ask you “what type of career path are you thinking?” Or “what are you interested in?” And you want me to define it for you.. absolutely not. I’ll brainstorm with you but if you don’t have a plan, nothing I do is going to help.

this is dangerously close to be passive leadership, where every single thing that is brought to the manager, they deffer back to you. Is accountability dead once you become a people leader? is being "strategic" just code for "uncaring"? I am kinda sick of all the mental gymnastics, fakeness and politics that go into growing in corporate. Why is everybody SO willing to keep feeding this stupid game?

I went into my dept leader role wanting to be the easy going boss, because I was afraid of what would be said about me. Recently I realized - easy going is ineffective, flipping the switch wasn’t easy but when I let go of what other people think about me it was freeing
