@secretmanchester: Could Greater Manchester be the birthplace of the humble chippy tea? 🐟🍟 Oldham’s Tommyfield Market boasts a blue plaque claiming it served the UK’s first British fried chips back in 1860. While many historians brand it a myth, pointing to London as the real inventors, Greater Manchester’s place in chippy history is still pretty legendary. Did Oldham really invent the national dish, or is London stealing the glory? I'm pretty sure fish and chips was invented by a Portuguese Jew Immigrant who fled dictatorship in Portugal. The deep fried with flour method is a Portuguese cuisine method. Something similar happened with Tempura, a Portuguese person went to Japan in 16th century and the Japanese learned the deep fried method from them.

When I was younger, I read that fish & chips was invented by Jewish immigrants who settled in the south. Now I’m older, I realise that they lay claim to everything.
