The figures associated with all these AI companies - including established tech companies like AMZ, MS, Fb - but especially the AI-specific companies like openAI and Anthropic, are completely divorced from reality. I am not a Luddite - I use several of these tools daily and am consistently blown away by how much they’ve evolved in the last year. That being said, they’re all burning through cash at astronomical rates, borrowing costs are near the highest they’ve been in a couple decades, and none of these companies have proved they have a plan to monetize their AI models to the point of profitability. Furthermore, the number of players in this field (and the fact that many of them are the biggest names in tech) means that the standard tech playbook (offering services at artificially low cost, crush competitors, consolidate, raise prices) isn’t feasible. At some point economic reality will catch up with some/most of these companies

518 billion infra-structure commitments, mostly non-cancelable, relatively small revenue that could erode quickly as cheaper model are increasingly used. Huge debt. What could possibly go wrong?

the $42B loss is shocking but the part that got me is they're still aiming for $2T. the hype is doing ALL the heavy lifting here
