![[G30S/PK!] The G30S/PKI, or September 30th Movement, was a major political and military event in Indonesian history that occurred from September 30 to October 1, 1965, during President Soekarno’s administration. At the time, Indonesia faced severe political tensions among the PKI, the Army, nationalist groups, and Islamic groups, along with economic problems. Soekarno’s Nasakom policy attempted to balance nationalism, religion, and communism, allowing the PKI to gain significant political influence. In 1965, tensions increased over the PKI’s proposal for a “Fifth Force” to arm workers and peasants, which was opposed by some Army leaders. There were also concerns about Soekarno’s health and reports about the Council of Generals, which supporters of G30S accused of planning a coup, although its role remains debated by historians. On September 30, 1965, G30S troops abducted several senior Army officers. Seven members of the Armed Forces became victims: Lieutenant General Ahmad Yani, Major General R. Suprapto, Major General M. T. Haryono, Major General S. Parman, Brigadier General D. I. Panjaitan, Brigadier General Sutoyo Siswomiharjo, and First Lieutenant Pierre Andreas Tendean. General A. H. Nasution escaped but was injured. The victims’ bodies were discovered on October 3, 1965, in a well at Lubang Buaya, approximately 12 meters deep, and the recovery was completed on October 4. The movement was suppressed in Jakarta under Major General Soeharto’s military command. After G30S, the PKI was accused of involvement and was eventually dissolved on March 12, 1966, following the issuance of Supersemar on March 11. Political violence and mass killings occurred in 1965–1966, resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths according to various historical studies. The events weakened President Soekarno and strengthened the military and Soeharto’s political position. Soeharto became Acting President in 1967 and was officially appointed President in 1968. This marked the beginning of the New Order. Soeharto ruled for more than 3 decades before resigning on May 21, 1998, following the Asian Financial Crisis and widespread protests, marking the beginning of the Reform Era.
