I was interviewed for a story for a publication and after the story published my name started appearing on all these different "news" sites but when I would read the articles they were just copies or variations of the original story made to look original.

I worked in public media before last years cuts. and Ai has devoured my field (translation) thru it's speed. It really is going to destroy whole fields either thru absorbing the labor or completely muddy-ing the waters.

I know real people with two of those last names and for a person from the area to see those names would instantly create a relationship "Oh, it must be real, I have cousins in the Yukon named Lafferty" situation. The north is vast, people know ir are related but Laffertys in Yellowknife who may have cousins might not know all the details of someone that far away but would trust the name. Point: the names aren't random.

do y'all remember the big controversy over fake black accnts on twitter a few yrs ago? and the govt said they were russian bots? but now ai is being pushed on us constantly & sh*t like this fake profile nonsense is the norm, if not embraced (ie the meta bots)

I’m fairly certain they want to replace all influencers too. Aside from the more clear motive of perpetuating certain images and stereotypes, it’s also way easier to have a fake person with no scandal attached to them

as someone who's interested in storytelling and currently works in social media, I had someone tell me whats the point of hiring me to take hours or a whole day to work on a poster design or video when AI can do it for 10 - 15 min. the AI is clearly AI, but they prefer it like that.

Leading up to the elections in my country, and now with the US midterms, I’ve noticed a lot of ads prompting me to take quizzes about my political stance, sexuality, and interests. These ads have evolved; while they used to feature random people, now a Black woman always appears in them. I’ve never filled them out because I remember the Cambridge Analytica scandal—I was studying communications at the time, and it influenced the peace plebiscite in my country. You’re right that this tactic is still being used; ever since then, election results have tended to mirror the outcome of that peace plebiscite.

A film/TV place I wrote for laid off most of their freelancers, me included, over a year. Now they're having their remaining editors just add a new line or two to intro paragraphs and republishing articles as "new" instead of edited, so that it looks like they still have a full staff of human beings. I think it's just laziness/trying to get away with AI without the criticism of having no or few human writers, but I do wonder how it will shape pop culture and criticism moving forward.
